Iceland is a truly unique place. I mean where else in the world can you walk from Europe to North America in a few seconds!
The Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet run through Iceland. This is one of numerous locations across Iceland that you can see both tectonic plates, however this is the only place in the world that the Mid Atlantic ridge rises above sea level. You can clearly see where these 2 tectonic plates are being pulled apart at a rate of approximately 2-3cm per year.
The Bridge Between Continents is a 15 meter bridge which allows you to walk the ‘gap’ between America and Europe – there are even signs on either side of the bridge saying ″Welcome to the North American Plate″ and ″Welcome to the Eurasian Plate″.
Pose for a picture under the bridge, or buy yourself a certificate at the Reykjanes Geopark visitor centre to prove you have walked from Europe to America – just don’t forget to to explore the local area as well.
